The 1089 trick is a fascinating mathematical trick involving a sequence of operations that always leads to 1089. Here's how it works:

The 1089 Trick

  1. Choose a 3-Digit Number: Ensure it is a number where the digits are not all the same. For example, let’s use 321.

  2. Reverse the Digits: Write the number in reverse. For 321, the reverse is 123.

  3. Subtract the Smaller Number from the Larger Number: Subtract the smaller number (123) from the larger number (321).

    • 321123=198321 - 123 = 198
    • .
  4. Reverse the Result: Write down the result and reverse it. For 198, the reverse is 891.

  5. Add the Reversed Result to the Original Result: Add the result from step 3 (198) to the reversed result (891).

    • 198+891=1089198 + 891 = 1089
    • .

Example

  1. Choose 452.
  2. Reverse the digits to get 254.
  3. Subtract the smaller from the larger: 452254=198452 - 254 = 198
  4. .
  5. Reverse 198 to get 891.
  6. Add them: 198+891=1089198 + 891 = 1089.

No matter which 3-digit number you start with (as long as it isn’t a number where all digits are the same), following these steps will always result in 1089!
